Representation of Women

The way women are shown in the media has changed over time. This is because society and its views about gender have also changed. However, some old-fashioned ideas about women still appear in a range of media products.

Often, women are shown in a way that is based on what men find attractive. This is called the male gaze. It means the camera or story focuses on how a woman looks, not on what she does or thinks. These products can sometimes show women as emotional, caring, or mainly focused on love and family.

Not all media products follow these patterns, some stories present women as strong, smart, and independent. These characters do not rely on others to save them, instead they act and solve their own problems. These representations of women are positive because they challenge old ideas and show that women can be heroes too.

Case Study - Katniss Everdeen: The Hunger Games

Katniss Everdeen is a great example of a strong female character who challenges gender stereotypes. Katniss is not shown as a sidekick or someone who needs saving, she is brave, independent, and very skilled. She uses a bow and arrow, hunts for food, and knows how to survive in the wild.

Katniss doesn’t dress to look attractive or try to impress others. She puts her family first and volunteers to take her sister’s place in a deadly competition. This shows that she is responsible and caring, but also very brave. Unlike many female characters in older films, she does not let emotions control her. She stays calm and thinks carefully, even in dangerous situations.

Katniss is a good example of a more modern and realistic way of showing women in the media. She is active, strong, and clever, which are qualities that can inspire people of all genders. Her story proves that women can be leaders, fighters, and survivors, just like any male character.
